Details have emerged on some reasons why the President, Bola Tinubu removed the immediate national chairman and national secretary of the All Progressives Congress APC, Senator Abdullah Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore respectively.
The duo were removed with the National Working Committee of the party confirming their resignation this morning.
The confirmation came at a meeting chaired by the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Abubakar Kyari, on Monday, July 17.
Kyari also confirmed his appointment as acting national chairman while Deputy National Secretary, Festus Fuanter, takes over as acting national secretary of the party.
Sources within the APC told the medium that Tinubu was the one who asked the duo to resign their positions.
According to the sources, some groups loyal to the President believed his core people should be at the helm of affairs of the party, hence, the decision to ease the duo out.
The sources noted that Adamu’s lack of support for Tinubu during the run-up to the presidential primaries, as well as some decisions taken by him as the chairman cost him his position.
It would be recalled that the former national chairman had in June 2022, announced for Senate President Ahmed Lawan as President Muhammadu Buhari’s choice to fly the party’s presidential flag.
Adamu announced at the meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja.
The former chairman also confirmed working for Senator Ahmad Lawan in the run-up to the party’s presidential primaries, although, he noted that he (Adamu) presided over the victory of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Arise Television, THISDAY’s broadcast arm on Wednesday, Adamu stated that the rumoured differences between himself and the president were unfounded, pointing out that before the emergence of Tinubu, he had the right to support whoever he wanted.
The sources said the writing had been on the wall for the former chairman, adding that efforts to salvage the situation were met by resistance from Tinubu’s loyalists.
“The former chairman knew what will happen to him the moment Tinubu emerges as President. There is no way he will be kept considering he didn’t support him as the candidate.
“Also, his attitude and decisions since he came on board as the chairman of the party were not good enough. He does things without carrying his members along”.
When asked why the former national chairman, Omisore also resigned considering the fact that President Tinubu supported his emergence, the sources told the medium that some groups loyal to the President believed he (Omisore) had served his purpose, hence the need to let him go.
According to the sources, the former deputy governor of Osun State was not seen as a key member of Tinubu’s loyalists and needed to be out to give room for the President’s people to be at the party’s’s helms of affairs.
“Tinubu loyalists believed Omisore has served his purpose and needed to be sacrificed with Adamu to give room for core loyalists to occupy the positions. He is not trusted in the inner caucus of the president.”
