St. Charles’ School, Osogbo, Osun State, Old Boys Association (SCOBA), on Saturday, said it gave the teaching and non teaching staff of the school a sum of N1.5 million as a reward for the performance of the students of the school during the last West African Examination Council (WAEC) examination.
The global president of the association, Mr Peter Adekunle who disclosed this during the 50th anniversary of the 1969/1973 sets, said the money was to appreciate the staff for their performance and motivate them to do more.
The association also commissioned a constructed interlocking access road within the school by the 1969/1973 sets.
According to Adekunle, the association challenged the staff of the school after some woeful results by the students in external examinations, adding that they were ready to do more if the students keeps getting better.
He said: “The 1969/1973 sets are celebrating their 50th anniversary and they decided to put paving stones from the main entrance of the gate down to the school building.
“In previous years, we discovered that our students have not been doing well unlike in the past when we excel in academics, sports and various kinds of endeavours.
“When we saw that the students were not doing well, we challenged the teachers. We conducted training on Information and Communications Technology for the teachers and we saw the result of the training.
“Ninety-six per cent of our students have 5 credits during the last West African Examinations Council and we rewarded all the teachers including none academic staff with the sum of N1.5m. We also told them that the more the percentage keeps increasing, the further we will give them more money.”
The school principal, Mrs Onaolapo Durosomo, appreciated the old boys association for their gesture, promising that students of the school under her watch will continue to excel.
She said: “I want to appreciate the old student association for all their interventions in the school. The money given to the teachers was to motivate them for their hard work and to perform better and take the school to a glorious height better than what we have today.”
In his word, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Kehinde Jimo, urged the students to emulate those who have graduated to achieve in life.
“I want to advise the students to grab the great opportunity the Lord has placed before them so that they too can work hard to achieve something great in the school and also become great in the future,” he said.
