Artificial Intelligence Central To Judicial System – University Don

Artificial Intelligence (AI), has been identified as a central tune to Nigeria’s Judicial System, considering it’s role in Human Rights ajudication.

Prof.Foluke Dada-Lawanson, Dean Faculty of Law Caleb University, Imota , Lagos dropped the hint during the presentation of the citadel’s 8Th Inaugura Lecture held on Thursday in its Multipurpose Hall.

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a specific subset of Technology that deals with creating intelligents, which system that can reason, learn, and act autonomously,” She said.

Describing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as stimulation of human intelligence that could rationalize and take actions that has the best chance of achieving a specific goal.
She said that it’s origination dated back to 1950, when Alan Turing first proposed the idea that machines could think in his publication ‘ Computing Machinery and Intelligence .’

Speaking at the lecture, the teacher of law, who hailed from Ere-Ijesa in Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State said “it can further be defined as an existing network of computer components and connections that mimic human ability to receive, process, reason and communicate information through various media”.

She reiterated that it could search through data to combine information for the production of a specific result through multiple media on an initial request from human operator.

She classified AI into hardware and software in infrastructure in various combination of each other based on its intended use and scale of application.

She disclosed that “in human rights ajudication in Nigeria and globally too, there are limitations on the relevance of AI to the judicial system.”

The Don identified these limitations as “data , Algorithm, human, feed back loop, deployment”, while at the same time addressing that bias in AI is essential to uphold human rights principles, promoting fairness and equality and in enduring that technologies are deployed responsibly in a manner that respect the dignity and autonomy of all individuals.

Others highlights of the events included comments from the dignitaries present at the lecture .

While the Vice Chancellor of Caleb University, Nosa Owens -Iben congratulated her for attaining the professorial seat, Prof. Gbenga Akingbehin, a Commercial Law lecturer from the University of Lagos recalled how the new Professor delved into academics through his advice.
Also, the husband of the Don, High Chief Adeyinka David Dada, who recalled her wife’s commitment to attaining the professorial seat, congratulated her for the success.
Other dignitaries present at the event are, her mother, High Chief (Mrs) Elizabeth Adedunmola Lawanson, HRM Oba Augustine Alowolodu , the Elere of Ere-Ijesa, HRM Oba Adamo Ademola , the Onitaji of Itaji -Ekiti, HRM Oba Elegboro of Ijebu-Jesa and High Chief Tise Adenipekun, the Aaro of Ere-Ijesa; who was accompanied by his wife, Yeye Luwa of Ere -Ijesa.

In all, the professor, who said she was fulfilled attaining that feat, commended her late father, High Chief Popoola Atand Lawanson, her mother and members of her family, who encouraged her in no small measure in attaining the goal.
