Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, on Saturday, lamented the division among politicians in his domain and demanded unity of purpose among them so as to foster the community goals.
The monarch who was represented by the Akire of Ikire Ile, Oba Abdulazeez Olatunbosun, said this at The Wings School, Iwo while bestowing awards on selected indigenes of the community.
He said, “In 2018, 10 indigenes of Iwo came out to express interest in contesting for the governorship election and that is why I’m telling us that there is a lot to do. Where we have too many leaders, it’s like we don’t have a leader. What we have in Iwo are political dealers and we need a leader who will unify all the forces. Without that, we won’t achieve anything.”
Earlier in his address, the proprietor of the school, ex-National Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Lai Olurode, said the award was to showcase those who have contributed to the development of Iwo in the area of academics and community development.
According to him, the awardees for the academic category included Prof. Kudirat Bakare, Prof. Isiaka Baruwa, Prof. Aliyu Lasisi, Prof. Bidini Taleatu and Prof. Mujidat Aremu, while late Mr Samuel Ogunwale and late Pa Tiamiyu Iromini, were celebrated for their positive impacts on the community.
He said, “The philosophy behind it was to recognise and showcase those who have had a rough start in life but in spite of their rough start, they were not discouraged from forging ahead. We are celebrating these individuals who have reached the peak of their careers and those who have contributed immensely to the development of our community. If you look at the lives of those we honoured today, they are worthy of emulation.”
