The students’ union of Obafemi Awolowo University has condemned the sudden death of a 100-level student, Heritage Ajibola who died in a septic tank in a private hostel in Ile Ife.
The president of the union, Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan, who confirmed her death in an interview, said, “This incident is highly unfortunate. The Union mourns her. May her soul rest in peace. May God give her family, friends, and coursemates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss”.
The 100-level female student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state, was reportedly passed away after she accidentally fell into a septic tank at one of the school’s hostels.
The deceased who was identified as Heritage Ajibola from the department of Linguistics and African Languages.
She was said to have accidentally fallen into the septic tank on Wednesday afternoon, February 9, 2022, at Beaver Hostel, Maintenance Hostels.
The union president noted that Heritage’s death was avoidable if the soakaway system was properly constructed and covered. It is saddening that this has happened despite the huge amounts of money paid by students for rent.
Taofeek said the death of Heritage is avoidable if the management of the Hostel had put necessary precaution in place and done the needful, dressing that the management must answer for the death of Heritage. He, therefore, said the Union is immediately demanding justice for Heritage, to forestall a possible reoccurrence of this.
