The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has stepped ahead in its resolve to rid the union of quacks with the introduction of digital registration for members.
The NUJ has been riddled with gatecrashers in the past years the trend which has brought about unprofessional practices in the profession.
The NUJ has embarked on different methods to sanitize the system but the digitization is a leap in taking the union forward.
As early as 9am on Tuesday, members of the union in Oyo State have been converging at Dapo Aderogba Hall, Press Centre, Iyaganku GRA Ibadan to take part in the data capturing exercise as part of digitization.
Speaking on the exercise, the Chairman of Oyo Council of NUJ, Adewunmi Faniran said the digitization of NUJ membership will help to reform the union.
“The exercise is meant to inject the new order into the union. It is meant to have a clear data for the members of the union.
“NUJ now has a website where all these names registered will go at the end of the day. What we are saying is that the era of every Tom dick and harry joining the union is gone.”
Faniran added that, “It is not about my friends or enemies. It is about everyone It is about what is right. We are trying to bring together all members of the union and have their names in a pool whereby their identity can be accessed anywhere in the world.”
According to the NUJ chairman, the new identity card that will be issued after the data capturing will serve as credit card which can be used for discount-laden transaction in departmental stores and hotels that have partnership with the union.
He added that any programme of the NUJ will now require the new ID card for attendance.
Adewunmi called on the members to troop out to get captured in the data capturing so that they could get their ID cards.
