NSCDC celebrates 2019 International Peace Day

The Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command, during the weekend celebrated 2019 International Peace Day, with a call on all stakeholders to give issues of claimate change the needed attention.

Speaking at the event held in Osun Command Headquarters of the Corps, Osun State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Kingsley Oguntuase, who was represented by the State Deputy Commandant, Mrs. Mosunmola Babayemi, explained that, because of its significance, issues of climate change must be focused on by governments, as well as individuals.

She said all hands must be on the deck to ensure peaceful living and to protect environment against preventable hazards.

In his remarks, Deputy Director, Ministry of Environment and Sanitation, Mr Wale Akala, explained that human activities in different environments could lead to positive or negative climate change.

He observed that climate change affect every other environmental issues such as deforestation, pollution, energy production, drought and desertification.

He added that both the rich and the poor would be at risk whenever climatic  conditions were not favourable.

The General Manager of Osun Waste Management Agency, Mr Femi Ogunbamiwo, who was also a facilitator at the seminar, said human activities has made climate change to become a global threat to livelihood.

He advised that efforts must be geared towards mitigating disasters such as, earthquake,water stress, water insecurity, emission forest degradation, deforestation and others.

Head of Department of Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit, NSCDC Osun Command, Adebayo Cornelius, while speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration “Climate Action for Peace”, noted that climate change would continue for decades or even centuries to come, unless wholistic actions to mitigate its effect were employed.

 He therefore called on people to desist from activities that could cause environmental hazards.

The programme was attended by stakeholders among them were, members of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), members of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Osun Plank Sellers, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), All Farmers Association of Nigeria and proprietors of plastic industries.
