A socio-political group, ‘Professionals in PDP,’ Osun State chapter, on Friday, called on Nigerians to support the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, whose geo political zone has not produced president, in the 2023 general elections.
The group stated this in a statement obtained in Osogbo, Osun State, co-signed by Dr. Sam Segun-Progress and Mr. Segun Adebiyi, its convener and secretary respectively.
It further said since the return of democracy to the country in the year 1999, two southerners who occupied the post for over 14 years, have been presidents, while the north, which has produced two presidents, would have spent only 10 years, after the current president, Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd), had left office.
It then said it would be fair, if the north, especially the geo political zone that has not produced president before, to produce the next president.
The statement read in parts: “If Tinubu (APC presidential candidate) wants to do ‘Emi lokan’, then the North East is the only zone that has never produced president. So, it is their turn. Yoruba has been president before.
“It is only the North East that we never had anybody we can address as a former president. Babangida is from the North Central, and Azikwe was from the South East. So, the only zone left out is the North East where Atiku comes from. We implore Nigerians to support him in the next poll.
“Former presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan are from the South and they spent 8 and 6 years respectively. Yaradua and Buhari from the North and when Buhari completes his tenure in May, it will make it 10 years for the north.
“So, the South is owing the North 4 years. If we are talking about fairness, then the next president must come from the north. After the next 4 years, we will have balance in the number of years that north and south have spent leading the country, but not at the moment.”
